Chapter 21

Tate found himself still smiling as he went back to work. Which was odd enough for him that he pondered Lacy’s last question. He didn’t think he could explain why he’d been smiling. At least, not in a way that wouldn’t be...not insulting, but maybe provoking.

Because he’d been smiling—and still was—because she had looked so horrified at what he’d known from the moment he heard Liz had married, that she had been seeing someone else for some time. It said a lot about Lacy Steele, that reaction did.

Cutter appeared, nudging his hand for a scratch.

“You know, it’s a good thing you don’t live in the city, dog. They’d have to curb your visiting.”

And he realized with surprise that he would miss that.

The dog turned in what Tate now knew was the direction of home and started off.

“Figure your work here is done?” he called out, feeling a bit silly.

The dark head turned as the animal looked back at him. He was noticing the contrast between that head and the reddish brown of the dog’s back and hindquarters when his gaze snapped back to Cutter’s face.

Had the damn dog winked at him?

He nearly laughed at himself. He was starting to think like the Foxworths apparently did, as even Lacy already seemed to be doing. Projecting human thoughts and emotions onto a dog.

He really would miss the visits. He’d always thought he’d never get a dog; no dog could replace having Sunny with him. But Cutter, while a very different dog, had him thinking about it, at least. Which is what he got for not driving him away in the first place.

And Lacy?

He would miss Lacy if he managed to drive her away completely. She was the good neighbor Gramps had said she was.

And that’s all she is.

He thought it rather forcefully. Pondering getting a dog was one thing. Thinking about his long-legged, blue-eyed neighbor becoming more than just a neighbor set off alarm bells so loud even he couldn’t ignore them.

But he couldn’t quite forget how clearly appalled she had been at what Liz had done. And that made him feel... He wasn’t sure how. Supported, yes. Warmed, even.

But when it came right down to it, he had the feeling he’d just learned everything he needed to know about who and what Lacy Steele was. But then, he’d thought he knew Liz, too. Had thought her tough enough—had thought she loved him enough—to get through his long deployments for the sake of the joyous return. But he’d been sadly wrong, and—

He’d never been so relieved to hear the revving motorcycle sound of his cell phone ring, because that not-to-be-trusted voice in the back of his mind was announcing that Lacy Steele would be as tough as her last name.

He found the phone under a sheet of sandpaper and picked it up. Saw the name. Grinned.

“He’s on his way home,” he said without preamble.

He heard a light, airy laugh. Yes, Quinn Foxworth was definitely a lucky man. “I hope he’s not bothering you too much?” Hayley asked.
